good morning. s thanks for joining us. i'm terry mcsween where i. >> i'm peggy bunker. let's get to the news in livermore where a deadly car crash and car fire as parts of 580 shut down. mike, what is it looking like out there? >> it's a really tough drive. in fact, not driving at all right now on the westbound direction. let's take you out to the maps, and we see the big slowdown, and the portion of the roadway because the speed sensors are triggered too right now. this is as you are coming into livermore out of the pass. you see eastbound is also slow. eastbound lanes two lanes are closed. two lanes are open. westbound is completely closed right now, and north livermore after a deadly crash, someone died as a result of this, and there's a car fire. the fire department has all of your westbound lanes closed. they're hoping to reopen one lane soon, but in the meantime

you're going to have to get off at first. take stanley down towards city streets, and then get back to make that exchange as you are heading westbound out of the altimont pass or have livermore valley. all westbound lanes are currently closed. they're hoping to reopen one, but because this is a deadly scene, you're going to have to get the coroner out there to do an investigation. we're expecting at least until afternoon before they can reopen. still, no estimation for the reopening from chp guys. back to you. >> thanks a lot. also happening now, bart and its two biggest unions are back at the bargaining table trying to resolve a problem with a contract both sides agreed to in october. >> we just herebied from one of the head of bart's -- she's never seen anything like it trying to go back on a contract that was already ratified by the union. she also said that they want a

resolution, and they welcome this federal mediator who is meeting with both sides here in oakland this morning. we have video of antionette bryant, who is the head of atu, local 1555 which traenz special agents and operators. she says that the issue is no mistake or clerical error. bart says it is. the board of directors approved a contract without a paid family medical leave provision for six weeks per year. bart said it would cost millions of dollars, and they just couldn't do it. a lawsuit was filed by the union. the union ratified the contract, november 1st. riders have already -- >> bring it to the table today. you guys clearly are aware of what our position is. we took a complete contract to our members. our members ratified that complete contract.

the board of directors, we feel, were irresponseible in piece mealing, it and so we don't know what the position is of the district at this point. >> now, we asked her about, you know, what riders should know about all this going on. there's a scramble during two previous strikes. she said at this point that's not being considered right now. they said they're going to be meeting all day today and tomorrow and they just want to reach a resolution of what that might be, though. that's still unclear. reporting live, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> thank you. a bingo game at a san jose high school came to a terrifying halt after an armed masked man rushed in and robbed the cashiers. wednesday night is bingo night at oak grove high school with all of the proceeds benefitting the school band. about 100 bingo players were in the school's gym gym. about 9:00 p.m. when the robbers entered the gym wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. >> it hewlett-packard really fast, and we heard gun, and we

looked, and the guy took off pushing the door and slamming against the wall. >> well, several people in the front of the gym ran after the man, but he did get away. some bingo players in the back dent actually even realize there was a robbery underway. bingo jackpots at the wednesday night games can climb to $5,000. san jose police told us this morning that detectives are working the description of the suspect and also the robbery unit is investigating. a wild police chase came to a screeching end in the east bay overnight. bart's antiok as the suspect tried to drive on his wheel rim after blowing out his tire while running over a spike strip. the fbi says the chase was connected to a joint operation targeting violent gangs in the city. the chase went from antioch to pitsford before ending up back in amtioch. the suspect, a 36-year-old man from amtioch was arrested, and no one was hurt. >> san bruno is moving forward

with plans to rebuild a neighborhood that was badly damaged in the 2010 explosion and fire. nbc bay area's chase cain is live with what's being done to rehabilitate that area. good morning, chase. >> reporter: well, good morning, peggy. they're talking about redeveloping ten empty lots here all at the same time. the city council made that decision tuesday night, although many people in this crestmore neighborhood still hadn't heard the news, but one thing they are familiar with is what's been going on here behind them really for the past three years. construction, underway right now to rebuild water and sewer lines underneath the streets. back on september 9th of 2010 were the pg&e pipe lien underground exploded leveling many homes, killing eight people and injuring 66 other people. the city council's decision will enter into negotiations with the

developer to take the ten remaining empty lots and redevelop them all at one time. they'll also convert a couple of empty lots into open space as well as build a new park here and while that is welcome news for neighbors, some people are still struggling with what happened. >> when you get in and you try to see, you know, the -- will marry my children or my grandson. it's -- >> those are the things you can't replace. >> exactly. >> construction can begin in

just six months. live here in san bruno, chase cain, nbc bay area news. >> all right, chase. thanks very much. >> family and friends of several young men missing from san francisco will come together foent to raise awareness about their disappearances. lynn ching has spent the past seven months searching for her missing son, 19-year-old sean city. he is recovering from a traumatic brain injury was last seen at international high school back in may. now his mother is making posters for the faces of several other men who also disappeared from the city hoping for answers. tonight the families will gather at city hall in memory of derek shau, who was found debt last month. >> acknowledge these missing boys, and also in memory of derek, who was found deceased and to raise public awareness. not only of the fact that they are missing, but that it continues to happen. >> she wonder if some or all of the cases are related. today the ntsb is analyzing evidence from yesterday's

federal hearing on the asiana aircraft at sfo. with a final report expected this summer, take a look at the video here. this is new video that the ntsb has released of the crash-landing. you can see the passenger jet hit the sea wall, skid across the runway, and then cart wheeled to a stop. the hearing did reveal that two pilots who were at the controls each thought the other should take the lead many calling off the landing. the pilots were concerned about landing without help from an airport navigation system that was out of order. >> vulnerabilities in that pilots sometimes rely too much on the automated systems and may be reluctant to intervene. >> newly released documents also revealed new details about the teenage girl who survived the crash only to be fatally struck on the runway. we are now learning that the girl was actually run over by two emergency response vehicles in that chaotic aftermath. she was hit once by a fire rig that was spraying foam and, again, less than 11 minutes later by a second truck.

for much more on this hearing just visit our website, nbc bay area.com, and search asiana. san jose is starting to enforce strict new laws against medical marijuana shops. the city council has approved new regulations allowing it to shut down pot shops next to homes, schools, and drug rehab centers. under the new rules, marijuana shops would only be able to operate in about 1% of the city. the rules could take affect as soon as next spring, but letters are already going out to pot shops in the band areas, letting them know what's going on. during the meeting, there was also an attempt to ban pot shops everywhere in san jose, but that vote failed. new details this morning about the man accused of faking sign language interpretation at nelson mandela's memorial. the interpreter is defending himself. he told johannesburg's "star newspaper" that he heard voices in his heads and hallucinated during mandela's memorial. that is also why his signs did not make sense. he did apologize, but told the newspaper that there's nothing else he could do in that situation. he also said he is on medication

a woman says she is grateful to be alive after an electrified utility pole snapped and smashed right through her windshield. take a look at this video here just into our newsroom. that pole landing just a few feet away from bridget butler in the passenger seat of her suv. butler says that she was momentarily stunned, but was trying to get out of the suv when a woman who had heard the commotion ran out on to her porch. >> i didn't realize that it was -- do not get out of your car. >> firefighters say the wire was still live and someone could have been electrocuted. a bipartisan budget deal reached by lawmakers just two days ago could get its first vote in the house today. both democrats and republicans have complaints about the deal. republicans say they spent too much money. democrats say the extension a long-term unemployment benefits

bay area. slowly warming up early. we were in the 20s and 30s around the north bay. not too bad right now. 50 are not santa rosa, and you can see the south bay and san jose. 50 degrees. hazy skies. it's the south bay that still has problems with smoke particle pollution. spare the air day today, and that should improve, actually, as we head into tomorrow. right now not a lot of wind with high pressure on the top. warm air atop of cooler air like the surface. acts leak a lid. it traps smoke particles ashld the bay area. for the reason we just explained spare the air alert is for the south bay, but tomorrow the winds turn more on shore, and we get vertical mixing of the atmosphere. no spare the air day officially for tomorrow yet, woodburning is banned for one more day. sfwlimplt we've got the sunshine into the evening, though. are we seeing patches of clouds approaching the coast as the wind turns on shore and the atmosphere should keep morning temperatures up a pew more

agrees tomorrow, we don't find any rain. the rain stays oof to the north. today near 60 in san jose. upper 50ers around foster city and palo alto. about eight more degrees for the rest of the afternoon into the north bay. a little chilly, though, for napa. 56 degrees. upper 50s around fremont and walnut creek, and livermore in the upper 50s, and we will see changes ahead in the seven-day forecast. you might have noticed numbers really starting to come up. we'll highlight a couple them for you. we're going to see the temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 60s. even out to the coast by tuesday and wednesday. here's the nice relief. the morning temperatures also coming up too. that is a trend we're also seeing from the bay to our inland cloak loebing beings from the tri-valley. morning temperatures out of the 20s and low 30s. now mid to upper 30s. that used to seem cold. that looks mild. >> still to come, a curve ball for major league baseball. how the violent collision involving giants star buster posey is now changing the game.

so make your holiday merrier than ever before. safeway. ingredients for life. marijuana news from the world of baseball. mlb announcesed plans to ban home plate collisions as early as next season. officials have talked about the ban for a while. the discussion was intensified in 2011 when this happened. hard to watch. it's hard to forget the collision between buster posey and florida scott cousins. it cost posey the rest of that season. his leg broke and ligaments torn. under a new rule approved by the mlb last night, catchers would not be allowed to block home plate and runners would not be allowed to target catchers. umpires would be allow to immediately revie plays at the plate. players will be subject to a host of punishments, including feenz and maybe even suspension. the rule still has to be approved by team owners and the players' union. meantime, the giants have filled that left field void. comcast sports net giants insider andrew bag areally

reporting the team has signed free agent michael morse. that's him right there. the one-year deal is pending a physical. last year morse hit 13 home runs in 88 games for the mariners and orioles. he has been hurt a lot, but when he plays, he is a big dude, he hits the long ball. kind of like a pat burrell. well, an east bay high school baseball star is hoping to use his talent to help out a young boy recently injured in a brutal to go attack. in august hunter kil-borne was injured when he was attacked by two pit bulls at an antioch home. he was released from the hospital, and only recently returned to school. that's where he met the high school player. lucas alstead. it's the fourth grade teacher. when he was invited to take part in a home run derby that highlights up and coming baseball stars. he was asked to choose a charity. he decided to help hunter's family pay for their medical bills. in january he will go to miami to compete against young stars

a new york zoo is showing off a baby they raised just after birth. >> she's awfully cute. she's a two toad sloth. she made her public debut at the gifford sfwloo in saer cues. she was born on august 1st just four days later. >> same day as my brother. >> very good. >> well, she shares an important day there. >> zookeepers decided to hand raise her because they feared one of the other animals might harm her. she's awfully cute. she's in good hands there. >> she's the only two toad sloth to be successfully raised by hand. >> another fact. things you didn't know about sloths. >> thanks for joining us. >> see you at 5:00.
